Birefringent  Polarizers

Polarizers are important optical components to converts a beam of undefined or mixed polarization into a beam with well-defined linear polarization.

Birefringent polarizers exploit the birefringent properties of crystals such as YVO4, Calcite and alpha-BBO. In these crystals at certain orientation, a beam of unpolarized light is split into two beams with well-defined linear polarization. The two beams propagate along different optical path and each beam is a very high purity of polarized light.
